Amazonian Turtles

The main current threats to Amazonian river turtles are consumption and illegal trade in eggs and meat.  There are also other issues such as deforestation, climate change, expansion of cattle ranching along watercourses, and dam construction, which impedes the movement of turtles and affects the hydrological cycle and sedimentation. More studies are needed to determine the degree to which these factors are impacting on turtles, though studies of other aquatic vertebrates such as fish have already shown how harmful these human activities can be to the environment.
